The novel "The Autumn of the Patriarch" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the brightest representative of 20th-century Latin American literature, was written in 1975 but continues to be relevant in the current global geopolitical situation, where dictatorship as a political form of governance returns with new strength and new expressions, further shaking the foundations of democracy and increasingly valuing the ideas of humanism.

In the novel, Marquez mercilessly exposes the relationships between power and the subjugated, blending fantastically grotesque and mythical elements with dispassionate realism. "The Autumn of the Patriarch" tells the story of a decaying, disenfranchised, and doomed world on the brink of agony. At its center is the patriarch—a power-hungry, violent, omnipresent absolute tyrant, behind whom lies the people—subjugated, mute, and disenfranchised.

Until now, the novel has been published in Latvian only once—in 1992 by the publishing house "Liesma." This is a reissued edition in a renewed version, improving various inconsistencies and following the development of modern Latvian language.
