500th anniversary edition of the Blaubeuren Monastery altar - history, artistic and symbolic analysis, and photos. 29x23cm, 80 pages, in German, in very good condition.
Blaubeuren Monastery, Latin Monasterium Burensis (1099), is a Benedictine monastery founded around 1085 next to the Blautopf lake. It was rebuilt from 1466 to 1501. The large altar is considered a gem of medieval art. It was consecrated in 1493 and completed in 1494. Destruction in the following century was prevented by the first Lutheran abbot Meteus Albers
(1563–1570). The mobile altar offers three different views corresponding to the church year's festive season. On the closed display side, the story of Jesus' Passion is depicted in four main scenes, along with two smaller background scenes from the Last Supper to the Resurrection. When the altar is opened, 16 panel paintings become visible, depicting the life story of the church's patron, John the Baptist.
