The original chronicle is a significant historical source written in Latin in the 13th century, detailing the Christianization and early history of the East Baltic region.

The oldest surviving manuscript copy of the chronicle dates back to the early 14th century and is known as the Zamoscianus codex.

The work is considered essential for understanding the history of Latvia and Estonia during the Northern Crusades period.
