A traditional Chinese "pillow" type box, similar to this one, was widely used in China during the Qing dynasty to protect belongings from thieves. The most valuable items were placed in the box, and the owner slept with their head resting on the concave lid – thus the box was always under their supervision. Historically, many such boxes were made from plain wood without decorations, while wealthier merchants opted for more luxurious versions – covered with leather and richly decorated. This particular box is covered with artificial leather, hand-painted using classic motifs. It has a brass clasp and hinges, and the interior is lined with old Chinese calendar papers or newspapers. The lacquer top layer on the lid is cracked in places.
