A new Ukrainian language teacher goes to pick up his thirteen-year-old nephew from a boarding school located on the other side of the city, but it turns out that unexpected warfare has begun in the neighborhood, chaos reigns, shootings occur, and it's no longer clear who is friend and who is enemy. At any moment, a mine could explode underfoot, homeless dogs roam around the ruins of destroyed houses, and apathetic, helpless people wander through the apocalyptic cityscape. The novel "Internat" was published in 2017, translated into 21 languages, and received various awards, including the EBRD Literature Prize in 2022. It is a story about war that comes suddenly and for which no one can ever be prepared; about how a familiar and close environment suddenly turns into a foreign, threatening territory. Translated from Ukrainian by Māra Poļakova.
