Without a trace, writer Owen Quine disappears, and his wife Leonora hires private detective Cormoran Strike. Initially, Leonora thinks her husband has gone away for just a few days, as has often happened, and wants Strike to help find him and bring him home.

However, during the investigation, it becomes clear that this case is not as simple as it seems. Owen Quine has just finished writing a novel in which nearly all his acquaintances are cruelly caricatured. If the manuscript were published, it would ruin many lives—therefore, there are many who would want to silence the writer.
