Collection treasure: Antique Germany large milk jug/pitcher, circa 1900
I offer you the chance to purchase an exquisite and rare antique German porcelain milk jug. This vessel was produced around 1900 and is a unique witness to the culmination of German porcelain craftsmanship during the Art Nouveau era.
🌸 The jug is adorned with a delicate yet vibrant spring motif – realistic pink rose garlands intertwined with light green ribbons and tiny white flowers.
The roses are depicted with remarkable precision and a sense of
realism, reminiscent of the famous Rosa centifolia (hundred-leaf rose), which symbolized the beauty and vitality of nature in Art Nouveau art.
✨ Unique properties of porcelain
This vessel is a puzzle for porcelain enthusiasts.
Thickness and translucency: On one hand, it is a solid, safe form of porcelain intended for use. However, on the other hand, it possesses incredible translucency, which is rare for such thick porcelain items.
Evidence: The attached photos show the vessel against the light near the flowers – the flower lines are clearly visible through the wall of the jug. This indicates exceptional porcelain quality and masterful raw material processing.
📜 Elitism and history
The large capacity (¾ L or 750 ml) suggests that this milk jug was not a separate item but part of a massive, representative dinner or tea/coffee service set. Such service volume and quality around 1900 were only accessible to very wealthy, elite German families who could afford such luxury. Thus, by purchasing this jug, you acquire a piece of this lost elite world.
✅ Condition: Excellent for an antique
The item has retained its excellent condition for its venerable age (more than 120 years):
No cracks, no chips, and no restorations.
Some decal losses in places, one industrial defect. There are dots.
The bottom clearly shows the marking (J P with a crown) and the volume impression in the mass ¾ L.
This antique German milk jug will be an outstanding addition to your porcelain collection or a luxurious, historical gift.
