From Australia. Opal triplets are gemstone products consisting of three layers (hence the name "triplet") bonded together to create a stunning, vibrant opal effect at a much more affordable price than natural solid opal. This structure consists of:
Top layer (dome): A transparent material, most commonly quartz, glass, or synthetic spinel, that protects the thin opal and enhances its color intensity (acts as a lens).
Middle layer: A very thin layer of genuine, high-quality opal that provides a bright play
of color.
Base (back): A dark material (often black glass, plastic, epoxy resin, or common opal – potch) that serves as a durable base and makes the opal colors much more contrasting and darker. The brooch is marked Stg Sil. 4cm x 2cm.
